 06 Aug 2013

On Sunday 14 July at 8 pm, FOXTEL Channel 183, the “Aurora Community Channel”, will televise a 90 minute program based on an epic orchestral concert held at the Sydney Opera House on October 31, 2012, of which Zip Industries was Principal Sponsor.

The Concert, “My Country Australia” was staged by The Symphony of Australia Pty Ltd in partnership with Sydney Festival, to mark the 85th Birthday in 2013 of the foundation of The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia.

It comprises 15 items, most of which are songs based on iconic poems from such celebrated authors of our past as “Banjo” Paterson, Bruce Simpson, JL Cuthbertson, Henry Lawson, John O’Brien, CJ Dennis, and Dorothea Mackellar.

Concert soloists include the composer Gavin Lockley, Renae Martin, Jon (Six Ribbons) English, Stuart Maunder, Michael Halliwell, Glenn Cunningham, Jennifer Murphy, Darryl Lovegrove, Tina (Lah-Lah) Harris, and Barry Ryan.

The finale, “My Country Australia” is based on Dorothea Mackellar’s much loved poem “My Country”, first published in 1908, and features a choir of almost 100 voices, including members of the Australian Institute of Music, The Sydney Male Choir, and the Blue Mountains Musical Society.

The concert was introduced with short addresses by former Governor General, Michael Jeffery, and Michael Crouch, Executive Chairman of Zip Industries, who is also Chairman of the Friends of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Committee.

Recordings of songs from the Concert are available on iTunes, and are listed on the website together with recordings of other works by Gavin Lockley, including “Symphony of Australia” and the historical musical “Morgan’s Run” written in collaboration with Colleen McCullough.
